RNYSO opens the second season of “The Whole Stravinsky” subscription

The Moscow Philharmonic's “The Whole Stravinsky” subscription, designed for several years, started last season and keeps going on. Having completed the first year of the cycle with “Petrushka”, the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Philipp Chizhevsky open the second season of the subscription with another of Stravinsky’s famous Russian ballets, “The Rite of Spring”. Its premiere 110 years ago was accompanied by a huge scandal, which did not stop this music from conquering the whole world. The miniature Three Poems from Japanese lyric poetry for soprano and chamber orchestra and the opera “The Nightingale” based on Andersen’s fairy tale will also be performed: Stravinsky began it even before working on “The Firebird”, and finished it after “The Rite of Spring”. The concert is attended by the Yurlov State Choir of Russia and soloists of Russian opera houses.

In the second season of “The Whole Stravinsky” series, listeners will trace the composer’s path from “The Rite of Spring” (1913), the sensational premiere of which became the symbolic beginning of the 20th century in music, to “Pulcinella” (1920), which marked Stravinsky’s turn to neoclassicism. Surrounded by six concert compositions for different casts, five major theatrical opuses will be performed, including “The Tale of a Soldier” and “The Tale of the Fox, the Rooster, the Cat and the Ram”.

“The Whole Stravinsky” cycle involves the performance in chronological order of all the works of Igor Stravinsky, including those that are practically not heard in Russia. For the first time in history, Stravinsky's legacy is performed in its entirety in one concert cycle, and this happens in his homeland.
